What is Multi-factor Authentication?
Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is a security feature that adds an extra layer of protection to your HSeLanD account. It works by asking you to verify your identity using two authentication methods when you try to sign in. On HSeLanD, you can choose at least one option out of three. The three options are:
- Pass key
- Time-Based One-Time Password via Authenticator App
- Email One-Time Password
We have more information on each of these methods and how to set them up below.
How does it work?
Multi-Factor Authentication works by combining different types of authentication factors to verify your identity.
If you are not receiving one-time codes via email:
We have found an issue with Gmail, Yahoo and some other providers blocking one-time code emails from HSeLanD. We are working directly with our email provider to resolve this as soon as possible. We recommend you retry accessing HSeLanD from tomorrow, as such changes can take time to take effect. If you still have issues tomorrow, please reply to this ticket at that time, including a screenshot of any errors you see (if applicable).
If you are delayed in receiving one-time codes via email:
We have found an issue with Gmail, Yahoo and some other providers delaying delivery of one-time code emails from HSeLanD. We are working directly with our email provider to resolve this as soon as possible. To help support you, we have increased the time a code remains valid from 30 minutes to 6 hours. This should allow you to set up multi-factor authentication or log in successfully.
How to set up Multi-factor Authentication (MFA)
There are three authentication methods available for setting up MFA on your profile, and you must ensure that you choose at least one of them. If you have your own device, such as a computer, laptop, mobile phone, tablet, etc., for accessing hseland.ie, the recommended option is Pass key as this will simplify future logins.
We recommend setting up more than one authentication factor. This ensures that if you don't have access to authenticate through one of your factors, you can always use a different one. It's also worth noting that it matters what device you set this up on. Will you always have access to this device when you are trying to access HSeLanD?
Pass key
If you are using a device, it will need a camera to scan a QR code.
When setting up your MFA method through pass key, first, you must verify that you own this account.
To do this, please follow the steps below:
- Enter your current HSeLanD password.
- Create a device name. Adding an effective/identifiable device name will make your future sign-ins to HSeLanD much easier. When you next go to sign in, you will know exactly what device you must check to authenticate your sign in.
- Select Continue.
Now you must set up the pass key on the device itself. There are multiple devices that you can choose from, but it must be a separate device from the one you are logging in from.
- Select Create Pass Key.
-
Select the Pass Key option you would like to use; in this case, it is iPhone, iPad or Android Device.
- This may look different. If you see the same screen as below, please press the 'Change' button so you can select iPhone, iPad or Android Device:
- Open the device you would like to use for the Pass key and open the camera. Please note you can only do this on devices that can scan QR codes natively within the camera application.
- Hover over the QR code.
- Follow the steps outlined on your device.
- Select Ok to confirm the creation of the pass key.
-
Now you can sign in to HSeLanD.
Authenticator App
This is useful when using a shared machine.
When setting up your MFA method through the authenticator app, first, you must verify that you own this account. To do this, please follow the steps below:
- Enter your current HSeLanD password.
- Create a device name. Adding an effective/identifiable device name will make your future sign-ins to HSeLanD much easier. When you next go to sign in, you will know exactly what device you must check to authenticate your sign-in.
Now you must access your authenticator app on the chosen device. There are multiple apps that you can choose from. At HSeLanD support, we recommend you use the Microsoft Authenticator app.
Setting up MFA using an authenticator app can vary depending on the device that you have, as well as the authenticator app that you are using.

Email One-Time Password
Please note: If you’re registered with your work email address, this might not be the best option. If you plan to access HSeLanD from home and don’t have access to your work email, you won’t be able to complete the sign-in process. In that case, we recommend choosing one of the other two MFA options instead.
To do this, please follow the steps below:
- Select Validate email.
- Go to the inbox of the email address you are registered with. If you do not receive the email, please check your Junk/Spam folder.
- Enter the 6-digit code and select Validate code.
- Enter your current HSeLanD password
I've already set up MFA, but I can't access my account
If you have previously set up MFA but cannot access your account or receive email verification codes, you will need to set MFA up again ensuring that you use a different factor. If you choose a pass key or a time-based one-time password via an authenticator app, you will not need to wait for an email.
Step one: Remove your current MFA factors
Visit the self-service tool using the link below
https://ids.hseland.ie/Account/CantAccessAccount
When asked if you have access to your email address, select ‘No’. You will then:
- Enter your security answer
- Create a new password
Setting a new password will disable your existing MFA factors, allowing you to start fresh.
Step two: Sign in and set up MFA again
Sign in with your email/username and new password. When prompted to set up Multi-Factor Authentication, select ‘Passkey’ or ‘Time-Based One-Time Password via Authenticator App’. These options do not require waiting for an email.
